Bodycomb(e)

Robert Bodycomb, a mariner as was his brother George, settled in Llansamlet, near Neath in Glamorgan, sometime in the early 1700's, presumably at the end of his sea-faring days.

It is thought he then started the Bodycomb tradition of managing a public house.  The Bodycombs or their close relations were involved in the management of "The Smith's Arms", Llansamlet for several generations.  Robert's descendants were either publicans and/or miners in the local collieries.

Several of the Bodycombs were also engineers, particularly after the Bodycomb
family was joined in marriage with the
descendants of George Kirkhouse, who was  a well known engineer, as were several of his sons.

During the 19th century, descendants of Robert sought new lives in the mining areas of the United States of America or in the goldfields of Victoria, Australia.  All prospered, and their descendants still live there to this day.

One of his descendants also went to Dartford, in Kent, England, where he started his own Bodycomb branch of the family.  Most of the young daughters were sent back to Llansamlet to help in the running of "The Smith's Arms" , and were promptly married off to local men, maintaining even closer links between Dartford and Llansamlet!
